Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology developed a robot skin

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently developed a robotic skin that senses external contact with silicon and carbon materials. The future we can use the robot skin as a new computer interface.

On February 2, KAIST released its research report, led by professors Kim Jung and Park In-kyu, who developed robotic tactile sensors that dramatically improve durability and detect touch.

At present, the robot's visual and auditory perception technology is very close to the human perception ability, but the robot's sense of touch is limited because the robot needs to detect environmental changes. New technology can be installed in the skin sensor, the sensor interconnection, so that the skin has a high elasticity and toughness.

The team used a "piezoresistive composite" to make the sensor skin, which combines silicon with carbon nanotubes. When the robot feels the external pressure, the resistance of the corresponding parts of the composite material will change.

EIT (Electric Impedance Tomography, electrical impedance tomography) is a medical technology, research team EIT technology applied to the skin of the robot, used to detect changes in resistance. The new technology connects the electrodes of many sensors through which current flows. The robot can sense the change of current and distribute the resistance inside the sensor. Even if hammering, it will not affect the sensor. If some of the sensors are broken, they can be reused.

Making sensors is easy. Researchers put composites into 3D molds, which are printed with a 3D printer and can have different shapes.

The team said the sensor can be used in different environments, such as on the robot skin, absorbing shocks, becoming a 3D computing interface, or becoming a new type of touch sensor. Kim claims that the robotics industry can be used in the skin and also in wearable medical devices.
